Exercise 9-A: Translate into English.

1. Gahapati kuddaalena bhuumiya.m kuupa.m kha.nissati.
householder / with spade / in ground / well / will dig
The householder will dig a well in the ground with a spade.

2. Khantiyaa piiti uppajjissati.
with patience / joy / will arise
With patience, joy will arise.

3. Narapati sve a.tavi.m pavisitvaa muni.m passissati.
king / tomorrow / forest / having entered / sage / will see
Tomorrow, the king will enter the forest and see the sage.

4. Gahapatayo bhuumiya.m nisiiditvaa dhamma.m su.nissanti.
householders / on ground / having seated / doctrine / will hear
The householders will sit on the ground and listen to the doctrine.

5. Rattiya.m te a.taviisu na vasissanti.
in night / they / in forests / will not dwell
They will not dwell in the forests in the night.

6. Narapatino puttaa a.taviya.m nagara.m karissanti.
king's / sons / in forest / city / will build
The princes will build the city in the forest.

7. Narapati, tva.m mutti.m labhitvaa Buddho bhavissasi.
O king / you / deliverance / having obtained / Buddha / will become
O king, you will obtain deliverance and become a Buddha.

8. Kadaa tva.m a.taviyaa nikkhamitvaa nagara.m paapu.nissasi?
when / you / from forest / having left / city / will reach
When will you leave the forest and reach the city?

9. Kuhi.m tva.m sve gamissasi?
where / you / tomorrow / will go
Where will you go tomorrow?

10. Tumhe rattiya.m visikhaasu na vicarissatha.

You will not wander in the streets in the night.

16. "Ratiyaa jaayati soko - ratiyaa jaayati bhaya.m."

Exercise 9-B: Translate into Pali.

1. The monkey will eat fruits with his fingers.

2. He will cross the forest tomorrow.
so / tarissati / a.tavi.m / sve

3. Sorrow will arise through attachment.

4. Child, you will fall on the ground.

* Use 'gahetvaa'.

** Bhaya is neuter. But there is also a feminine word for fear from the same root: bhiiti.
