About Tipitaka Font

Tipitaka Font Version 1.1

What is new?

Version 1.1 (July 21, 2001) consists of Sanskrit characters required for our study of Pali.

Version 1.0

What is Tipitaka Font?

Tipitaka Font is a fonts set that consists of pali and sanskrit diacritic letters in addition to the English alphabet.

What are pali and sanskrit diacritic letters?

A diacritic is a mark applied or attached to a known symbol (here we refer to a roman letter) to create a new symbol that may represents a modified or new value.

Are these not available on my computer?

No, a standard PC configuration of the minimal font sets do not provide pali and sanskrit diacritic letters.

Is it necessary to install Tipitaka Font?

Yes, especially if you want to read the Pali Language section of this website. Otherwise, it is not necessary to install Tipitaka Font.

Other than Tipitaka Font, are there other fonts that contain pali and/or sanskrit diacritic letters?

Yes, there are several of them, and they are also available online and free for use, just like Tipitaka Font. A list of the fonts are as follows:

1. Times Norman Font
2.
VRI Roman Pali Font
3.
Leedsbit Pali Font
4.
CSX Font
5.
Indic Times Font
6.
The Appeal Diacritic Font

So Tipitaka Font is free?

Yes, it is free for usage. However, please inform us if you are considering making changes to the fonts. You may also request the bitmap files of the fonts from us.

Is Tipitaka Font compatible with other fonts?

Yes, Tipitaka fonts is compatible to other fonts for the standard character set (those keys on a US keyboard).

What about the extension character set?

The extension character set has to cater for pali and sanskrit diacritic letters, and are not similar with the common fonts (such as Times Roman and Arial). However, the character map of Tipitaka fonts resemble exactly that of Norman fonts. This will offer some variety for users, and also simplify the switch between the two fonts.

Would there be any update of Tipitaka Font?

Yes, as and when necessary, Tipitaka Font will be updated. New versions will be made available on this website as soon as they are ready for use.

A Word from the Designer

Hi, thank you for downloading Tipitaka Font. Version 1.0 still look crude on the screen. However, we are looking into improving it in the very near future. The fonts look fine on paper (believe me, go ahead and print it!)

Should you encounter any problem using the fonts, please let me know so that corrections could be made in the next version.

You may write to me at ypong001@yahoo.com.

I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

With metta,
Ong Yong Peng.
